Wierd quantistic effetcs and the flight of birds

The birds might direct their flight by taking advantage of the Zeno quantum effect...

The what now? :>
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Quantum_Zeno_effect

'
It describes the situation in which an unstable particle, if observed continuously, will never decay. This occurs because every measurement causes the wavefunction to "collapse" to a pure eigenstate of the measurement basis. In the context of this effect, an "observation" can simply be the absorption of a particle, with no observer in any conventional sense.
' (Now: that's like saying that if you watch a falling tree, it will never fall, but if you stop watching, it will eventually collapse!)

And here for an explanation of how the birds use this Zeno effect in their brain as a compass: http://tech.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=08/04/18/1350232&from=rss
